About this role

Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi is a private not-for-profit teaching hospital providing tertiary and secondary level healthcare services. It is the first hospital in East Africa accredited by the Joint Commission International from the USA. The Locum Nurse position in Accident & Emergency reports to the Nurse Manager.

Triages each patient using CETAS criteria and determines priority based on physical, psychological, and social needs. Performs focused assessment of chief complaints and complete head-to-toe assessments in a timely manner. Carries out hemodynamic monitoring including vital signs, neurological checks, and fluid status.

Provides professional nursing care for assigned patients in the emergency room. Documents all assessment data, investigation results, care given, and multidisciplinary team discussions accurately. Administers medication safely, monitors responses, and reports adverse reactions promptly.

Assists physicians with procedures like insertion of invasive lines and maintains airway management with oxygen therapy and suctioning. Ensures safe environment through infection control practices and proper waste disposal. Identifies patient and family education needs and implements appropriate teaching.

Requirements

  • Registration with the Nursing Council of Kenya
  • Experience in Accident & Emergency nursing
  • Knowledge of CETAS triage criteria
  • Proficiency in hemodynamic monitoring and vital signs assessment
  • Skills in airway management and oxygen therapy
  • Ability to perform pain assessment and initiate analgesia protocol
  • Familiarity with infection control practices and waste management guidelines

Responsibilities

  • Triage each patient using the CETAS criteria and determine priority of care based on physical, psychological and social needs
  • Perform focused assessment of chief complaints and complete head to toe assessment and re-assessment of patients
  • Carry out hemodynamic monitoring to include vital signs, neurological and fluid status, labs and radiological evaluations
  • Provide professional nursing care for assigned patients in the emergency room
  • Administer medication safely, monitor patient responses and promptly report adverse reactions
  • Assist physicians to perform procedures such as insertion of invasive lines
  • Maintain adequate airway management to include oxygen therapy, nebulization and suctioning
  • Document all assessment data, investigation results, care given, discussions with the multidisciplinary team, family/patient interactions accurately
