About this role

Northwestern Medicine has an exciting opportunity for a Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in Behavioral Health/Psychiatry. The APP supports the psychiatry and behavioral health team across the full addictions continuum of care, averaging 15 patients per week. Responsibilities include residential, PHP, IOP, ambulatory clinic visits, and limited inpatient coverage.

The schedule is Monday-Friday first shift, with the majority of patient care provided in person and remote visits available when clinically appropriate. Rotating weekend call occurs approximately one weekend per month from Friday 5:00 pm through Monday 7:00 am. Holiday coverage may be required depending on the call schedule, including call pay.

The role demonstrates clinical expertise through diagnosis and management of health problems, responsible for health outcomes of assigned patient population. Confers with collaborating physician and other health professionals in area of clinical expertise. Actively participates in quality improvement and research pertinent to area of expertise.

Develops appropriate educational systems for patients, families, and staff in areas of expertise. Mentors graduate students in aspects of advanced practice and patient care. Serves as a patient advocate and role model for 'Patients First'.

Requirements

  • Licensed Physician Assistant or Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Certification by NCCPA for PA or ANCC/AACN for ACNP
  • Illinois state licensure and privileging
  • Clinical expertise in behavioral health, psychiatry, and addictions care
  • Ability to conduct patient intake assessments
  • Experience with residential, PHP, IOP, and ambulatory clinic settings
  • Participation in inpatient coverage and consults
  • Maintenance of certifications and continuing education

Responsibilities

  • Conducts comprehensive appraisals of patients' health status by taking health histories and performing physical examinations
  • Provides direct clinical care to patients
  • Prescribes/orders medications, therapies; orders/interprets laboratory tests, x-rays and procedures according to clinical privileges
  • Evaluates patients to determine their need for further health care
  • Provides comprehensive teaching to patients and families
  • Documents in the medical record all care and education provided and/or procedures performed
  • Refers to other disciplines as appropriate and serves as consultant to other disciplines
  • Integrates research based knowledge and clinical expertise in decision making
