About this role

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, the Nurse Associate Unit Secretary assists with patients’ activities of daily living and plan of care in Cooper University’s 35-bed level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. This role involves supporting healthcare team, patients, and families while maintaining high standards of professional ethics. Individuals with experience in stocking, clerical/administrative tasks, and cleaning NICU specific equipment are sought.

Daily duties include supporting activities like bathing, dressing, grooming, feeding, toileting, and mobility. Perform technical tasks directed by RN such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care, documenting appropriately. Identify and communicate changes in patient status to RN while demonstrating standard precautions and safe patient practice.

The NICU features smaller pods for up to 4 infants, with a transitional nursery for up to 12 preparing for discharge. Care for infants from 23 weeks gestation needing surgical interventions, respiratory support including high frequency ventilation and nitric oxide. A neonatal transport team retrieves infants requiring higher level care from South Jersey hospitals.

The team includes all Registered RNs, attending physicians, fellows, Neonatal Nurse Practitioners, Residents, dedicated Respiratory Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Physical Therapists, Speech Therapists, Unit secretaries, and Child Life Personnel. Requirements

  • Successful completion of an unlicensed health care provider/technician program
  • Completed at least one fundamental nursing course in an accredited RN Program
  • 1 year or more patient care experience in a similar role
  • 0-2 years of experience preferred
  • High School / GED
  • Demonstrates standard precautions including care of patients in isolation
  • Experience in stocking, clerical/administrative, and cleaning of NICU specific equipment

Responsibilities

  • Supports activities of daily living including bathing, dressing, grooming, oral care, feeding, toileting/hygiene, mobility, and transport
  • Performs technical duties as directed by RN such as phlebotomy, vital signs, point of care testing, EKGs, and Foley catheter care
  • Identifies and communicates changes in patient’s status to RN and responds appropriately
  • Reinforces education of patient and family regarding individual care needs and safety issues
  • Assists in admission, transfers, and discharges of patients to and from the unit
  • Participates in patient satisfaction initiatives and performance improvement activities
  • Completes annual unit-specific competencies by specified due date
  • Stocks, performs clerical/administrative tasks, and cleans NICU specific equipment
