About this role

St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne seeks passionate and experienced Psychiatric Nurses (RPN Grade 2) to join the Casual Nurse Bank team in the acute adult inpatient mental health unit. Casual positions offer a range of shifts including AMs, PMs and Night Duties in a friendly and supportive team environment.

Complete mental health risk assessments including visual observations and mental status examinations for patients. Administer medication, including PRNs for behaviour escalation, and monitor vital signs with medical escalation where appropriate. Involve in emergency codes like code greys for behaviour unable to be managed with de-escalation.

Work with ECU high dependency patients in crisis stages of mental health illness. Collaborate with patients to encourage independence and control over their issues. Engage in discharge planning, care plan planning, and multidisciplinary team work.

Requirements

  • Current condition free nursing registration with AHPRA
  • Current National criminal history check or willingness to obtain
  • Current NDIS check or willingness to obtain
  • Demonstrated minimum 3 years knowledge and experience in psychiatric nursing, in adult acute mental health settings
  • Postgraduate qualification in mental health nursing preferred but not essential

Responsibilities

  • Completing mental health risk assessments including visual observations and mental status examinations for patients
  • Administering medication, including PRNs for behaviour escalation
  • Calling and being involved in emergency codes for behaviour that is unable to be managed with de-escalation techniques (eg code greys)
  • Monitoring vital signs and medical escalation where appropriate
  • Involvement with ECU high dependency patients who are in the crisis stage of their mental health illness
  • Working together with patients to encourage independence and control over their mental health issues
  • Discharge planning, care plan planning, working with multidisciplinary team
